The Joker may be the villain in the The Dark Knight, but it’s pollution that has defeated Batman.

CNN reports that shooting of director Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins sequel has hit a snag while filming in Hong Kong. The Chinese city’s horrible pollution problem has made the shooting of some scenes impossible. An action shot in which Batman was supposed to drop from a plane into the Hong Kong harbor had to be cancelled, because tests of the water indicated that it’s too dangerous to swim in. That’s right, they aren’t worried about the fall killing their stuntman, they’re worried that simply being in the water will end him.

It seems their fears are justified. They found all sorts of bad things in their water samples, including salmonella and tuberculosis. That’s right, going for a swim in Hong Kong can give you TB. Maybe global warming isn’t the worst possible side effect of extreme pollution. That’s kind of like going for a Sunday drive and catching herpes at a red light. Scuse me a moment while I cancel that vacation to China.

So the scene has been eliminated from the movie entirely, and instead we’ll get a cutaway to later at a building, rather than see Batman swimming in tuberculosis infested waters.
