Honesty And Negative Influence: Talking With The Spectacular Now's Miles Teller & Shailene Woodley
It began at Sundance in January. It was one of the first films that Katey got to see at the film festival and lauded the performances of stars Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller, saying that the former’s turn “proves that [her] vulnerable performance in The Descendants was no fluke,” and that the latter is “easily one of the best actors of his age.”
A few months later at SXSW I found my own words echoing Katey’s. I was truly blown away by the film when I saw it in Austin and couldn’t believe how much incredible, authentic emotion the two young stars brought to their roles. And with the film now in theaters, you can experience it yourself.
Based on the novel by Tim Tharp and adapted by (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber, The Spectacular Now follows the story of Sutter (Teller), a fun-loving, alcoholic high school senior whose personal philosophy drives him to always live in the moment and forgo any thoughts about the future. Dumped by his long-time girlfriend (Brie Larson), he rebounds with the innocent and more sheltered Aimee (Shailene Woodley). The two grow close and fall for one another, but how can a couple look towards the future when one only believes in the now?
Late last month I had the awesome opportunity to speak with the film’s two main stars, and with the movie expanding into more markets this past weekend the time is right to share. Watch our interview below in which Teller and Woodley discuss the honesty in the screenplay that attracted them to the script, what it was like working with director James Ponsoldt, and whether Sutter should be seen as a positive or a negative influence on Aimee’s life. Check it out!
SPOILER WARNING: In the final question regarding Sutter’s influence we do get into a bit of spoiler territory, so if you wish to stay away from all plot details you may want to pause the video before that segment begins.
