Katniss And Haymitch Anticipate Bad News In New Hunger Games Image
If you don't know anything about The Hunger Games, the image below might seem like a bizarre choice for The Los Angeles Times to include in their big 2012 preview piece. We see three of the movie's stars slumped over on a couch, with Elizabeth Banks's Effie Trinket, slightly out of focus in the background, Woody Harrelson's Haymitch practically horizontal and resting a drink on his lap, and Jennifer Lawrence's Katniss tied up in a tight knot, looking like Haymitch has just said something offensive and she's vowed to keep her mouth shut. But fans of the books will recognize that there's much more going on here, and most likely, this is a fairly famous scene in the books they're recreating. Check out the image below and see if you can guess what I mean.
I'm assuming this is an image of Katniss and Peeta waiting for their scores from their tryouts in front of The Hunger Games judges. Each of the contestants in the Games is expected to go in front of a panel of judges-- including Wes Bentley's Seneca Crane-- and show off skills that would help them in the game arena, like weightlifting, weapon-making, or in Katniss's case, archery. Her audition is hugely unorthodox, though, and you can see in her body language in this still that she's awaiting some terrible news-- and Haymitch seems to believe it too. Just off camera-- you can see his legs next to Katniss-- is Josh Hutcherson's Peeta, who is far less fiery than Katniss and had a much more normal audition. But a lot relies on their scores, so both of them have reason to be nervous.
We've got barely two more months before The Hunger Games finally opens, and plenty of anticipation to do between now and then. The movie comes to theaters on March 23.
