Kevin Durand is not a rookie when it comes to young adult novel adaptations, though it's possible you totally missed him. The actor played the central villain in last year's I Am Number Four, which was based on the book by Pittacus Lore (akaJames Frey and Jobie Hughes), though in the film he was covered in make-up making him hard to recognize unless you already knew he was in the movie. Hopefully he'll get some actual screentime in the newest project that he's lined up.

Durand, along with actor Robert Maillet, have signed on for parts in the upcoming The Mortal Instruments adaptation, according to Variety. The movie is based on the young adult novel by Cassandra Clare that centers on a young girl named Clary Fray who learns that she actually comes a long line of demon hunters. Lily Collins, best known for her roles in films like Abduction and Mirror Mirror, will play Cassandra while Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays Caius in the Twilight movies, will play Jace Wayland. Both new actors will play villains in the movie, playing Pangborn and Blackwell. The Karate Kid remake director Harald Zwart will be helming the new film, which is still in pre-prodution.

This might actually be kind of funny. Durand, who stands at a giant 6'6", has an incredibly intimidating stature, but this movie will be putting him next to Maillet, who rises to 7'0" (you may know him best for playing the giant in 300 or Dredger in Sherlock Holmes). It will be interesting to see Durand next to someone who actually makes him look short.
