Riddick Plot Details Revealed As Principal Photography Gets Underway
If you follow Vin Diesel on Facebook (and hundreds of thousands of you do), you know that he has been dropping little hints from the set of his latest Riddick sequel. But now, things have grown significantly more “official” with a press release from Universal announcing the start of principal photography on the second Pitch Black sequel, which looks like it’s merely going by the title Riddick.
With the announcement comes an official plot synopsis, which we have for you right here:
The infamous Riddick (Diesel) has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he's encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.
Diesel has played Riddick in two films prior to this -- Pitch Black and the bigger-budget (but bloated) The Chronicles of Riddick -- and co-stars from those earlier films will show up here. Karl Urban, who has added sci-fi notches in Star Trek and Dredd to his belt, returns as Vaako. Newcomers to the franchise, according to the release, include: Jordi Molla (Bad Boys II) as Santana, the arrogant captain of the mercenary ship; Matt Nable (Killer Elite) as Boss Johns, a man looking for answers; Katee Sackhoff (TV's Battlestar Galactica) as the Nordic mercenary Dahl; and Bokeem Woodbine (upcoming Total Recall) as bounty hunter Moss.
Diesel and his director, David Twohy, have promised a return to the darker, stripped-down tone of Pitch Black, which should be music to the ears of Riddick fans. The film’s shooting in Montreal, and will be released by Universal in 2013. Keep it here (and on Diesel’s Facebook page) for production details as they emerge.
