Robocop Sets August 2013 Release, Anna Karenina Coming This Oscar Season
It's hard to think of anything that really connects the upcoming Robocop remake and the upcoming Anna Karenina adaptation, so let's just get down to facts. Recent schedule updates at Box Office Mojo have finally assigned release dates for both films; Anna Karenina will come first, with a November 9 release this year, while Robocop will be a late summer release next year, coming August 9, 2013. Both dates make sense given the respective production schedules of the film-- Anna Karenina was shot last year, while Robocop is currently gearing up for production.
And both dates make sense in terms of the people distributing them and what kind of movies they're likely to be. Anna Karenina, an adaptation of Tolstoy's famous novel from Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Joe Wright, includes an all-star cast of Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Olivia Williams, Emily Watson and Kelly Macdonald, among others. Coming from Focus Features, who helped push Atonement to a Best Picture nomination, Anna Karenina kind of checks off all the Oscar season boxes, which makes the November 9 release a pretty sweet spot to occupy.
Robocop, on the other hand, occupies pretty much the opposite end of the moviegoing spectrum. A remake of the 1980s Paul Verhoeven classic, the movie will star newcomer Joel Kinnaman as the titular cop revived as a cyborg, and will be directed by Jose Padihla, the Brazilian director of the Elite Squad movies. Having had success with the early August releases of everything from District 9 to Superbad, Sony will attempt to launch a new summer blockbuster in that late period, safely away from the competition of The Avengers and The Dark Knight, at a point when younger audiences who don't remember the original movie will be ready for something new.
A handful of other movies also got set for release dates in this batch of updates, including Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs sequel Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers, which will arrive December 20, 2013. Check out Box Office Mojo for the full list.
