Writers Hired For Bruce Almighty Sequel image
Universal Pictures has already tried to make a follow-up to Bruce Almighty and it was an incredible failure. I am, of course, referring to Evan Almighty, a comedy starring Steve Carell that cost a whopping $175 million to make, but made only $100 million at the box office (and only $172 million internationally). Still, the first film was a smash hit, netting nearly $500 million globally. Apparently the studio thinks that the reason the second movie underperformed is because Jim Carrey wasn't involved, because now they are planning another movie around his character.

Variety reports that Universal has hired Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel - who wrote the script for Carrey's Yes Man as well as Hot Tub Time Machine - have been hired to pen a sequel to Bruce Almighty. The script is being written with the idea that Jim Carrey will return to the role of Bruce. While titles like Dumb and Dumberer, Son of the Mask, and the aforementioned Evan Almighty have demonstrated Carrey's hesitance to do sequels in the past (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls being the one exception) he suggested last year that he would game this time around. The original film, released in 2003, was about a TV reporter who is granted all of god's powers for a week.

Here's the problem I have with this story: Lloyd Christmas, Ace Ventura and Stanley Ipkiss were all memorable characters and Bruce Nolan just doesn't fit into that category. The first movie was basically Jim Carrey playing Jim Carrey with the powers of the almighty, so there isn't really anything more to explore. The character learned his lesson in the end and his life went back to normal. Why do we need a sequel?
