Each mutant in the X-Men universe is born with a special ability, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have other talents. For young Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse, not only will we see her telekinetic (and possibly telepathic) abilities, but she’ll also be taking up archery, and director Bryan Singer is instructing Grey’s actress Sophie Turner on proper technique. Take a look!

Singer’s latest behind-the-scenes tease on Instagram shows him on a lush, green landscape teaching actress Turner how to use a bow, which he said was a skill he "learned in summer camp." Turner already has some experience using a bow during this past season of Game of Thrones, but it doesn’t hurt to practice more. This adds X-Men: Apocalypse to the growing list of modern media projects that are showcasing archery (though maybe not as heavily), like The Hunger Games and Arrow.

Although Bryan Singer didn’t give context for why Sophie Turner will be wielding a bow in the movie, it might have something to do with another photo he posted last month. This particular photo featured a group of uniformed men in a forest armed with bow and arrows. At the time, we speculated that these men might be hunting Magneto as a child or an adult in the film’s primary setting of 1983. Since regular guns and most modern weaponry are useless against his metal manipulating powers, they would need to rely on primitive weaponry to take him down.

Although this may not be the same environment where last month’s picture was shot, could Jean’s archery have something to do with these mysterious men? It’s hard to say, but her special abilities are powerful enough that arming herself with a bow seems unnecessary. On the other hand, seeing as Jean will be one of several students at Professor X’s School for Gifted Youngsters, perhaps archery is just one of the extracurricular activities offered when classes are finished. While she’s doing that, Cyclops could be performing in a school play and Storm could be on the debate team. In Jean’s case, though, after shooting the arrow at her target, she would have to telekinetically retrieve it rather than walk over to grab it. This way she gets better control of her power and improves her aim at the same time. Two birds, one stone.

We’ll seen Jean Grey with the rest of X-Men: Apocalypse’s mutant-filled cast when the film hits theaters on May 27, 2016 - and click over to Page Two to see a video of Bryan Singer impressing the young Sophie Turner with his archery skills!
