Could The Avengers 2 Add Emily Blunt As Ms. Marvel?
Once upon a time, in the far-away time when we had never seen Captain America or Thor get their own movies, Emily Blunt was going to be part of the Marvel universe. The actress had been chosen to play Black Widow in Iron Man 2, a role that obviously led into the Avengers and constant rumors of a spinoff, but was kept away from S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters thanks to a contract she signed with 20th Century Fox back when she made The Devil Wears Prada, which allowed them to essentially force her to star in Gulliver's Travels, a Jack Black comedy vehicle. Gulliver's Travels was instantly forgotten and Iron Man 2 was a massive hit-- somethings, things just don't work out, even when you're as generally awesome as Emily Blunt.
But now, the Looper may be able to make her way into the Marvel universe after all. The Daily Mail reports that both she and Luther star Ruth Wilson are up to play Ms. Marvel in The Avengers 2, now set for a 2015 release date. Yes, The Daily Mail is a British tabloid, which means we have to take all of this information with a giant grain of salt. And yes, this is pretty much the first we've heard of Ms. Marvel appearing in the Avengers sequel, and while it's entirely possible they're planning on it, we're not sure how The Daily Mail would be the first to know.
But The Avengers sequel has to up the ante somehow, and knowing Joss Whedon's predilection toward strong female characters, it would make sense for him to bring in another female superhero, especially one who has actual superpowers. Ms. Marvel's origin story has her fused with alien DNA in an accident, and given the intergalactic leanings of The Avengers so far-- and with the alien Thanos confirmed to be coming back-- that plot thread could make perfect sense. But we're also going to need confirmation beyond a Daily Mail rumor to actually expect either Blunt or Wilson to show up for Avengers 2.
