Ghostbusters 3 is simply never going to happen. Without Venkman on board there can never really be a GB3, and as much as we’d like to see it, we’re not going to. Swooping in to save the day however is Robert Zemeckis with Dark Horse Comics property Charles Fort, a supernatural thriller that has been described as a “period Ghostbusters”, according to THR.

The film will be based on a four part series released by Dark Horse back in 2002 called Fort: Prophet of the Unexplained. Fort himself is not a fictional character and spent the early 19th century trying to explain the unexplained, kind of like an early member of the Ghost Hunters. The comic series took some license though and made him more of an action adventurer, but this alteration will obviously bring the excitement of the story to the next level.

Evan Spiliotopoulos is on board to pen the adaptation. He spent a long time writing straight-to-DVD sequels to Disney movies, and is as we speak breaking into the feature realm with his fist major motion picture Snow White and the Huntsman starring Kristen Stewart. The supernatural thriller Fort will be a bit of a different project for the writer, but I’m sure after as many Disney movies as he’s written that this will be a nice change of pace.

Another in a long line up of lesser-known comic properties that are finding their way to the big screen, Charles Fort sounds like it will be right at home in theaters. No doubt Universal will groom this to be the first in what they hope will be a franchise even though the series only ran for four issues. No release date has been announced.
