You know how Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice normally call in the previous winners and various executive types to interview the final four candidates and make recommendations that Trump either contorts to validate his previously decided opinions or ignores entirely? Well, the show went in a different direction this year.
Celebrity Apprentice is a completely different game with only a handful of players left. While the early rounds are about finding a way to contribute and navigating the sea of utterly bizarre personalities, the latter rounds are about using celebrity connections and good old fashioned hard work to actually get shit done.
The Celebrity Apprentice Power Rankings are an ordered compilation of weekly lists put together by TV Blend writers Mack Rawden and Jessica Rawden. Each week after viewing the episode, they each rank the competitors in order. Fourteen points are given for a first place vote, and this week, nine were given for a last place vote.
On paper, Gary Busey vs Trace Adkins is about as lopsided of a Celebrity Apprentice project manager match-up as the show has ever given us. In actuality, however, the slugfest turned out to be pretty back and forth with the final decision coming down to details rather than giant mistakes.
Spelling anything wrong in an advertising proposal is a good way to see the job go to someone else. Spelling the creator’s name wrong in an advertising proposal is as close to a guarantee of failure as one can get. Unfortunately for one of the teams, that’s exactly what happened this week, and not surprisingly, that project manager got the big ugly axe.
In this week’s one-hour episode, the two teams were given the chance to raise funds. Since the teams are pretty uneven, the team with the smaller numbers got to choose someone from the other team and the group members chose trace. Lil Jon took on project manager for the team that recently acquired Trace and Lisa Rinna took on project manager for the other team.
The year of the utterly bizarre boardroom decisions continued this week with the losing project manager making a horrible decision and bringing the wrong people back with her to fight it out. Trump was once again flabbergasted by the foolish approach, and the poor project manager never even had a real chance to talk her way out of it. More on that later, however.
Wait…what? I’m pretty sure that was the reaction almost all Apprentice fans had after seeing the utterly bizarre decision one project manager made as to who to bring back to the boardroom last night. After having watched every single season, having watched people quit and people asked to be fired, I’ve still never seen anything as dumbfounding and infuriating as what happened.
Once the teams were determined, Trump gave them the challenge: each team would create meatballs to sell as a fundraiser. The teams decided on two completely different strategies. Adkins took leadership on one team and decided not to open it to the public, instead spending his time focusing on some higher-check whales. The other team took on Roderick as project manager and brought in tons of smaller donors
After lambasting Arsenio for his verbal actions in past weeks, Donald Trump eventually turned to Aubrey and fired her ass, beginning this week’s Celebrity Apprentice final task with a bang. With Arsenio pitted against Clay, we didn’t have to wait long to ascertain what the final challenge would be. The next morning, Trump told the two men they would each be putting on a variety show where they would also have to create a PSA announcement for their charities and bring in some big ticket donors.
At the beginning of this week’s task, Elle and CHI showed up, and for a second, I thought I was smack dab in the middle of an episode of Project Runway. Then, Trump opened his mouth instead of the soft, slightly Germanic accent of Heidi Klum and I realized this would probably be some sort of Celebrity Apprentice advertising challenge. I was right.
This week’s Celebrity Apprentice challenge pitted Clay against Aubrey in a battle for the best male cologne project. Trump’s Success brand was the target and both teams needed to come up with a display and a pitch for two lady executives covering the cologne line. With only a day to build a display and come up with a creative theme, the teams went to task immediately.
Things would have run smoothly, had Lisa been able to maintain an aura of authority and not one of a crazy person. The bond she created with Dayana last week was nowhere to be seen and the two squabbled back and forth prior to the boardroom and then again in front of Trump. As far as skill sets went, this team dominated, however. Dayana rocked out with puppet creation, Penn capably riled up the crowd, and my God was Clay great with puppet voices.
Generally, when a Celebrity Apprentice episode begins on a low note, it will devolve into a downhill spiral of egos clashing throughout its two hours. So, when Arsenio started out the episode completely out of control, freaking out and calling Aubrey a bitch and a whore in one breath, it seemed like we were headed for trouble. Especially after Lisa took the bait, yelling back at Arsenio and later calling Dayana and Lou stupid.
This week, NBC treated Celebrity Apprentice fans to a special 3 hour episode, featuring two challenges and two very specific firings. With various butts on the line, two strong players went home this week, while two weak players slipped through the cracks, once again. Trump is on a role with punishing his players for small missteps and, man, is it cringe-inducing to watch.
