Lori Loughlin Signs Up For A New Zip Code

Lori Loughlin, AKA “Aunt Becky,” has snagged a role on 90210. Now I know that sentence may be confusing, but don’t worry. You have not, in fact, traveled back to 1991. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Loughlin is joining the cast of the Rob Thomas Beverly Hills: 90210 remake as “the mom.” Loughlin will be playing Celia Mills, a former Olympic athelete who moves to Beverly Hills with her family after her husband becomes the new Beverly Hills High principal.

As we reported earlier, the character of Annie Mills, her daughter and lead of the show, was offered to Hilary Duff. Duff opted not to take on the role, which is now going to Canadian actress Shenae Grimes. Grimes is moving from one teenage drama to another, as she has starred on Degrassi: The Next Generation since 2004.

Loughlin most memorably played Aunt Becky on Full House, but has recently been seen on the short-lived Summerland and In Case of Emergency. The casting of such a recognizable face seems to indicate that 90210 is going to follow the O.C./Gossip Girl trend of giving the parents actual storylines of their own, instead of just reacting to what the kids are doing. I’m a big Sandy Cohen fan, but could kind of care less about whether Dan’s dad and Serena’s mom are going to get together. Which way do you hope 90210 will go?
