Bates Motel, the Psycho prequel starring Vera Farmiga as Norma Bates and Freddie Highmore in the iconic role of her troubled son Norman, will make its debut on Monday night. And with the series premiere just around the corner, or more accurately, the weekend, A&E has released the opening sequence of the highly anticipated first episode to whet viewers' appetites. Sorry, still have the other popular horror property prequel on the brain. Watch the first six minutes of Bates Motel's "First You Dream, Then You Die."

Well. It had me basically in the first frame when I saw His Girl Friday playing in the background and heard Ralph Bellamy's Bruce Baldwin utter a phrase about living with mother. It doesn't waste anytime getting into the gruesome either, having the doomed teen wake and stumble to find his dead father, not to mention a mother that doesn't seem too surprised by the news. After the economical introduction of the leads, the show moves right into introducing the other main character, the Seafairer Motel. Wait, that's not right.

The relationship between mother and son seems spot on, lovingly antagonistic with the right traumatic seeds planted to shove them both off the edge at any moment. The ease in which I invested in them is probably the result of the great performances from both Highmore and Farmiga (something that's obvious even in the short dose) and I'm looking forward to seeing how that love gets twisted and what secrets Mom is keeping.

Finally, it's all wonderfully shot, infusing the show with a sense of anxiety and forbidding atmosphere. And we got to tour the house! I can't wait for more set design! Wow, that's the nerdiest thing I've said in a while. Bates Motel premieres on Monday, March 18 at 10:00 p.m. ET on A&E. Created by Kerry Ehrin and Carlton Cuse, the series stars Freddy Highmore, Vera Farmiga, Max Thieriot, Nicola Peltz, Olivia Cooke, Mike Vogel and Nestor Carbonell.
