With no less than 25 IMDb exact-title matches, it seems as if Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of the most knocked-off stories of all time, second to The Odyssey and nearly any Shakespeare play. Now, science fiction television will be no stranger to the story, as the BBC’s ever popular series Doctor Who is taking on Dickens. Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol will be aired on BBC America on Christmas Day at 9 p.m., but Doctor Who fans won’t have to wait too long to own their own copy. The DVD and Blu-Ray editions will hit stores on February 15th, 2011.

Priced at $14.98 for the DVD and $19.89 for the Blu-Ray, Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol runs a little steep for an hour-long television special. Luckily, there will be some bonus content, including a feature called "Doctor Who Confidential" which gives a behind-the-scenes look at the special. The other bonus is a feature called "Doctor Who at the Proms 2010." This feature, which will also be premiering on Christmas Day, 2010, is hosted by some of the Doctor Who cast members, and is a viewing of the BBC’s annual Proms concert series at the Royal Albert Hall.

If you are a fan of mixing sci-fi with classic fiction, or you already have copies of the past five Doctor Who Christmas specials, this DVD is for you. Here’s to hoping that it ends up as good as the special Christmastime Series Finale for Extras, but I’m not keeping my fingers crossed.
