Danny McBride’s fame has been kind of rough. His funniest roles in the past few years have gone mostly unseen. His crippled Western Union clerk in Due Date was the best part of that movie, and he managed to sell his character in Your Highness a hell of a lot more than James Franco. Still, box office returns were low, and if it weren’t for the ingenuity of McBride’s Kenny Powers in Eastbound and Down, I’d say he might be stuck in genius bit parts for the rest of his career.

Luckily, Eastbound and Down proves McBride can carry a show. If you haven’t seen it, Season 1 is already out on DVD. Even better, HBO Home Video, in conjunction with Warner Home Video, has announced Season 1 of Eastbound and Down will be coming to Blu-ray on August 2nd, the same day Season 2 will hit Blu-ray and DVD.

It actually surprised me HBO waited until this year to produce Season 1 on Blu-ray. HBO was the first television group to get its act in gear and bring most of its programming onto Blu-ray in the first place. This makes me wonder if the studio assumed Eastbound and Down wouldn’t be popular enough to merit a Blu-ray release. It might go a long way to explain why Eastbound and Down will be likely be canceled after Season 3 is finished airing. The one good thing that can be said about all of this is that we won’t have to wait long for HBO and Warner to create some sort of box set for the series. So maybe this isn’t the best release for us, after all.
