Love Will Burn When The Burning Plain Hits DVD In January

Considering The Burning Plain only made it to 26 theaters, odds are you haven’t seen it. Magnolia Home Entertainment will give you the chance to own the latest from Academy Award-nominated writer Guillermo Arriaga when The Burning Plain hits DVD and Blu-ray on January 12th.

The film focuses on four seemingly unrelated characters. There’s Sylvia (Charlize Theron), a restaurant manager trying to escape her past; Maria (Tessa Ia), a young girl left in the care of her father’s best friend after his crop-dusting plane goes down; Mariana (Jennifer Lawrence), who finds solace in an unusual place after losing her mother; and Gina (Kim Basinger), a woman involved in a passionate love affair. If you know anything about Arriaga, you know these characters won’t be unconnected for long.

It’s not easy being an Academy Award-nominated writer, because people expect only the best from you. That’s The Burning Plain’s biggest fault; it can’t compare to Arriaga’s other work like Babel or 21 Grams. Comparisons aside, the film holds up well and features a stellar cast.

It comes down to image clarity when choosing between the BD and DVD. Both are modestly priced -- the BD costs $29.98 and the DVD $26.98 -- and both come with the same three featurettes: “The Making of The Burning Plain,” “The Music of The Burning Plain,” and “HDNet: A Look at The Burning Plain.” If you’re look for something dramatic, don’t mind a handful of talky scenes, and enjoy films that require some detective work on the viewer’s part, you’ll likely enjoy this one.
