Telltale Games announced that they have finalized the release date for the new season of The Walking Dead, which is set to go live next month in December. The new season will kick off a five episode tale featuring new and returning characters.
Telltale sent out the word via press release, indicating that the new season is titled The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series -- A New Frontier. The first of the five episode season will premiere on a Tuesday in December on the 20th. The episode will be available -- along with the rest of the season -- on PC via Steam or the Telltale Online Store, along with a release on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4 and iOS and Android devices. This is a slight delay from the original November release that they announced back in September.
You'll be able to download the game from the digital online storefronts for each respective system, which includes the Microsoft Xbox Store for those playing on the Xbox 360 or Xbox One, the PlayStation Store for the PS3 or PS4, and the iTunes App Store and Google Play store for the iOS and Android devices, respectively.
Much like how they've been handling their recent releases, Telltale Games will also offer gamers an opportunity to get their hands on the third season of The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series from local retailers via a physical release for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Starting February 7th, 2017 there will be Season Pass Discs made available containing the first episode of the game on disc with automatic access to the other four episodes through digital download. The game is currently available for pre-order on places like GameStop right now.
Speaking of pre-orders... for those who pre-order a digital version of the game for the PlayStation 4 Telltale is throwing in an extra Walking Dead special in the form of free copies of Walking Dead: Michonne and The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Season Two.
The PC version gets a slightly different bonus in the form of a 10% discount when pre-ordered from the Steam store. I definitely would say that PlayStation owners are getting the better deal out of this.
Telltale rolled out a similar feature for Batman: The Telltale Series where gamers could either purchase the game digitally or buy the first episode and the season pass on a physical disc for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Speaking of that series, they recently rolled out the fourth episode and will be releasing the fifth episode to wrap up the season. They planned on doing that before December 31st of this year, so there's only going to be a minor overlap between Telltale's Batman and The Walking Dead. I would like to hope they don't cannibalize each other the way Battlefield 1 seriously ate into Titanfall 2's performance on the market due to releasing so close to one another.
Regardless of overlap with Batman, starting in late December you'll be able to hop back into the undead world of Telltale's take on Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead with returning heroine Clementine and her new traveling partner Javier, as they wade through the treacherous landscape of wily humans and flesh-eating walkers.
