Ubisoft's Nintendo Switch exclusive, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, managed to become a smash hit for the hybrid game console thanks to a strong showing at E3 and for combining the unlikely elements of turn-based and Super Mario. Well, the game may be in for some additional story DLC.
The Twitter account that covers the Switch's Nindies actually ended up stumbling upon something a bit different: a potential release date for the Japanese eShop appearance of brand new story-oriented DLC for Ubisoft's Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.
The details were shared in a recent tweet, which features a screen capture of the Japanese version of the Nintendo Switch's eShop, and you can clearly see that it lists the new DLC for the game having a June 30th, 2018 release date.
According to the season pass listing for the Nintendo Switch exclusive, Nintendo is publishing Mario + Rabbids in Japan on January 18th, and then later on down the line there's the listing for the new DLC.
However, what we don't know is if this is actually story DLC for the game and we're not entirely sure if the listing is accurate for the DLC. It's highly unlikely that Nintendo misrepresented the release date on its own eShop, but we won't know for sure until there's an official announcement for the DLC.
The likelihood is that Nintendo or Ubisoft may make an official announcement either around the time of the game's release on January 18th in Japan, or it's possible that the company may wait until post-launch and later into the year during a Nintendo Direct to roll out details on the story DLC.
From back when the game first had its $20 season pass announced, we knew that it would receive four pieces of DLC, starting with the roll-out of the steampunk weapons back at the end of August, 2017. That DLC was followed by some additional DLC in the fall, including some new co-op maps and a versus mode.
The initial report indicated that the story-oriented DLC would be available at some point in 2018. However, what we didn't know is when the last piece of the DLC puzzle would be connected to the rest of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, only that the DLC would be coming at some point this year.
If the Japanese version is any indication to go by -- being about six months behind the Western version of the game and its DLC releases -- then it could mean that the final story DLC could arrive for North American and European gamers at some point during the first quarter of 2018, and could be arriving sooner than later.
However, Nintendo and Ubisoft might have the DLC on delay for a simultaneous regional release, arriving in North and South America, Europe and Asia all at the same time. Of course, we can only speculate at this point, but most people are convinced that the DLC will be out in the Americas by the end of January while it preps for release in June for Japanese gamers.
