Assassin's Creed 4's latest trailer takes place in a bar. No, not a virtual one. The voice actors for three of the game's main characters are sipping on pewter mugs and discussing what they love about their roles.
Matt Ryan from Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior is playing the role of Captain Edward Kenway, the main player character. Edward is a former British privateer living in the West Indies. He turns to a life of piracy during the profession's golden age in order to gain fame and fortune. Eventually he becomes an Assassin and becomes wrapped up in that order's covert war against the Templars. Throughout the game, he has to balance his own selfish desires with his obligations to the crew of his ship and to the Assassins.
"This game is about a man who's trying to find his way in the world," Ryan says. "His character is in permanent conflict as to which direction to go in."
One of the first characters Edward will encounter in AC4 is Blackbeard. Blackbeard, also known as Edward Thatch, is played by Psychoville and Casualty actor Mark Bonnar. Thatch is an infamous pirate who acts as a father figure to Edward. Given his fearsome reputation, he'll probably be the devil on Edward's shoulder.
"I like the fact that no one knows who he was other than the fact that he was fucking terrifying," Bonnar says.
Edward will also work with Charles Vane, another famous British pirate. Voice actor Ralph Ineson (Chris Finch from the British version of The Office) describes him as a "lunatic" and "the baddest of the pirates." Even though he seems like a loose cannon, he and Edward will partner up on occasion.
Bonnar, Ryan and Ineson all provide motion capturing in addition to their voice work. The result is that their scenes look more life-like than you'd expect for a game based around pirate super-assassins.
We're slowly closing in on Assassin's Creed 4's release so the new trailers from Ubisoft are coming at a fast pace. A couple days ago, the company released a narrated gameplay video.
