CCP Games announced today that the open beta for Dust 514 will commence later this month. The MMO shooter, which recently merged with EVE Online, will let all interested PS3 players find out what it's like when worlds collide.

Dust 514 has been in closed beta for a number of months now as CCP Games works out the kinks for this upcoming massively multiplayer online first-person shooter. Dust takes place within the war torn galaxy originally established by popular strategy MMO, EVE Online. More than just a “side quest,” though, the plan has always been to let the two game directly impact one another, existing concurrently in a single universe where what happens in one game directly effects what happens in the other.

On Jan. 10, CCP finally merged Dust 514 with Eve Online’s Tranquility server, creating a persistent universe that exists between a PC game and a console game for the very first time. And once Dust 514 becomes available as a free download for the open beta on Jan. 22, gamers everywhere will finally be able to see exactly what that means for gameplay.

“The launch of the Dust 514 open beta is another step towards our long-term vision for CCP and EVE,” said CEO Hilmar Veigar Petursson. “But this is just the beginning. As we have done with EVE Online, in the coming weeks, and for years to come, we will continually improve upon and add to the dust 514 experience, as well as add deeper integration between the two games and their communities.”

If you’re currently in the Dust closed beta, you’ll be happy to know that no further character resets are planned for the game. What you do from now on will be permanent, which means you’ll get to strut around in your fancy gear and your fancy higher stats, once the noobs get unleashed on Jan. 22.
