Square Enix debuted a new trailer for Final Fantasy XIII-2 during PAX Prime this weekend. It shows both cinematics and gameplay footage from the upcoming PS3/Xbox 360 RPG.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 takes place three years after Final Fantasy XIII. Lightning, the main hero from FFXIII, has disappeared and many believe she's dead. Her younger sister Serah thinks she's still alive, though, and sets out with Noel to find out what happened to her.

The combat is once again a variation on the traditional Active Time Battle system. The player controls the main character and is supported by two A.I.-controlled companions. The player can assign offensive, defensive or healing roles to these companions, though. Quick time events called Cinematic Action will allow you to turn the tide of a battle.

FFXIII-2 will debut in North America in January 2012.
