Later this year Square Enix will release Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the relaunched version of FFXIV, on PS3 and PC. In the meantime, they're looking for a few good players for the beta test.
If you're a Legacy member, you can play the beta from phase 1 and onward. You don't need to apply for testing. Legacy members registered their copies of FFXIV before May 31st, 2012 and subscribed for a minimum of 90 days.
Gamers who applied for the PS3 beta of the original FFXIV and were selected will not have to apply either. Instead, your applications will be automatically considered for the PS3 beta of Realm Reborn. If you'd rather test the PC version, however, you'll need to reapply.
Realm Reborn seeks to fix many of the problems that plagued the original MMO. The user interface, jobs system, and PvP content have all been remade. Square Enix also remade the game world and created a new graphics engine. The new Full Active Time Event system will create dynamic events for players to participate in, such as the defense of towns.
To mark the end of FFXIV 1.0, Square Enix held an apocalyptic story event. At the conclusion of the event, the meteor Dalamud devastated the planet. The final moments of the world were depicted in this trailer.
The new prologue trailer released by Square Enix today is an extended version of that earlier trailer. This version's a little less of a downer. It contains three minutes of footage from this new world awaiting players.
North American gamers can sign up for the beta here. If you're in Europe, head to this site.
