Nintendo continues to dip its toe into the realm of DLC, this time announcing plans for paid content to be added to upcoming 3DS strategy RPG, Fire Emblem: Awakening. Along with the announcement of impending DLC following the game’s Feb. 4 launch, Nintendo also revealed details for Awakening’s SpotPass and StreetPass functionality.
In Fire Emblem: Awakening, players will create their own character and take on the role of the second in command for the Shepherds, a group of soldiers who protects the kingdom of Ylisse from marauding bandits. Given that this is an epic roleplaying game, you better believe that your merry band of mercenaries will eventually have to take a leading role in the struggle to protect Ylisse from outside forces.
Along with the game’s main storyline, additional maps and side stories will be introduced into Fire Emblem: Awakening in the form of DLC, the content and price points of which will vary. The first piece of DLC will be made available on launch day, Feb. 4, but at least Nintendo had the good sense to make the initial day-one content free of charge for a limited time. Players will be able to download and access DLC through the Outrealm Gate, which will be found on your in-game map following completion of chapter five in the main story. DLC will feature new maps to explore, enemies to fight, new class types, skills, playable characters and more. This content is set to roll out on a weekly basis, so be sure to keep a nice allowance of funds available on your 3DS at all times.
Nintendo will also be offering SpotPass content free of charge. By visiting various stores and special events, players will gain access to additional maps, storylines, characters and items only available through SpotPass travels.
Finally, the Fire Emblem: Awakening online suite is rounded out by StreetPass functionality. Players will be able to build a team of 10 members from their current in-game roster, name them, leave a message for other players, and equip them with various goods. Anyone who comes across your StreetPass team will be able to find them on their game map, which they may then visit in order to recruit the team leader for a price, buy the equipped weapons and items, or defeat the team in battle in order to recruit the leader for free.
