Polyphony Digital hasn't released Gran Turismo 6 yet but they're already talking about Gran Turismo 7. Series creator and Polyphony CEO Kazunori Yamauchi says that the PS4 exclusive could debut as early as 2014.
"We don't want to take too long on Gran Turismo 7," Kazunori said in an interview with TopGear. "Best-case scenario? Next year. In GT6 we really had to tune the software 100 per cent to maximise the PS3's architecture, but of course the PS4's hardware is much better, so I think the overall quality of the game across the board will be boosted when you come to play it."
The decision to release Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 rather than the PS4 raised a few eyebrows. It seemed like it would've been a great launch title for Sony's new console. However, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO Jim Ryan said in May that the PS3 still had plenty of potential for Polyphony to exploit for GT6. He also said that the sales potential of PS3 influenced their plans.
"The other factor is that on PS3 we have an install base of 70 million units. On PS4 on launch day we’ll have an install base of zero units. There’ll be plenty of games to help drive PS4 – not least Driveclub in the racing genre from Evolution Studios, a studio with a fantastic pedigree."
It's true that GT6 on PS4 could've cannibalized DriveClub's sales at launch. It ended up being a moot point, though, because DriveClub was eventually delayed to 2014. So now they'll be crowded out by GT7 instead. I'm sure Evolution Studios is thrilled.
GT fans might scoff at the idea that Polyphony can get the next game out within twelve months. After all, they had to wait four years for Gran Turismo 4 and five for GT5. The company did manage to release GT3 on PS2 a year after its predecessor landed on PSOne, though, so there's reason to be hopeful.
Gran Turismo 6 will feature all of the vehicles and tracks from GT5 along with new additions. In total, the game will offer 1,200 vehicles and 33 tracks. Players will also be able to create their own events with a revamped course editor. The game will debut worldwide in the first week of December.
