According to Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2 would not carry the Call of Duty moniker despite being a sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The box art says otherwise.

Infinity Ward spokesperson Ryan Bowling snapped the first picture of the game's box art today. It's a cool picture of a soldier in front of a big explosion. Call of Duty has been not-so-subtly tacked onto the top left corner of Modern Warfare 2.

Bowling claimed in an interview that the game didn't have the COD title because they wanted to establish that this was a direct continuation of COD4: MW. Other games in the series have had completely standalone storylines. However, it seems like someone at Activision or IW realized that having a title without the phrase "Call of Duty" - the brand name that has sold millions and millions of copies each year - was just silly.

Of course, it's completely possible this isn't the final box art. There's still a ways to go until the game's November release. No doubt they'll play around with the design a little bit. The relative proportions of "Call of Duty" and "Modern Warfare 2" need some work.
