Overkill's The Walking Dead Announced

Robert Kirkman, Starbreeze Studios, Overkill Software and Skybound Entertainment have all joined forces in collaboration for an upcoming co-op shooter called Overkill's The Walking Dead. The new game is designed to be the action-oriented experience that fans of The Walking Dead have been craving for quite some time.

Brilliantly Epic came across the news from over on Starbreeze's official website, where the company had a press release detailing the aims of the new game and collaborative partnership between all of the involved studios.

Bo Andersson Klint, CEO of Starbreeze AB commented about the news, saying...

“For Starbreeze Studios this is a major strategic move, taking on an independent brand and treating it as our own. We have great experience from the PAYDAY series that can be utilized in bringing The Walking Dead to first-person shooter gamers everywhere.”“The Walking Dead TV series is the #1 TV show in over 50 countries with millions of viewers all around the world, and The Walking Dead comic is one of the bestselling comics ever. OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead will be our biggest endeavor to date and marks a new era for our company. This is a long-term commitment, as with all our franchises. Teaming up with Robert Kirkman on creating this game and involving our community in the process will show the strength of independents working together.”

The news didn't arrive without a bit of promotional fanfare, as a teaser trailer was released along with words provided by Kirkman about offering gamers the definitive Walking Dead video game experience, courtesy of Overkill Software.

Overkill Software has so far been reaping a lot of praise for their efforts with Payday 2, which has sold quite affluently and was recently on the receiving end of some brand new DLC called the Big Bank.

It makes perfect sense that a team like Overkill would be put in charge of delivering a cooperative, survival shooter game set within Kirkman's Walking Dead universe.

Previously, Activision had a crack at creating a cooperative first-person shooter featuring the Dixon brothers from the television series, with the likeness of both Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus used to help sell the game, but it was poorly received due to being a poorly made cash-in.

This new game is being designed more-so as a quality title to really pay tribute to the quality of the property that's been lacking in other action-oriented takes on The Walking Dead.

Perhaps Overkill's The Walking Dead will be to the shooter genre what Telltale's The Walking Dead is to the adventure genre? We can only hope.

The game isn't due for release until 2016, so it's going to be a long wait. In the meantime, Overkill will be introducing Payday 2 gamers to “Lucille” the barbed-wire baseball bat from the graphic novel as a melee weapon, so maybe that will help bide the time for some gamers as they count down the days to 2016.
