A lot of people still haven't taken the dive into eighth-gen gaming. Some gamers are still waiting to find the best deals on the new generation consoles before diving in head first, others are leery to take the plunge until a game really speaks to them. Sony is making the buying decision slightly easier by including a free game in the $399 bundle.
Over on the official PlayStation blog, Sony's VP of marketing, John Koller, rolled out a small press release about the new bundle deal, where gamers will be able to pick up a PS4 and The Last of Us: Remastered, together, for only $399.
“If you’ve managed to hold out on upgrading to PS4 for this long or if you have a stack of gift cards laying around after the holidays, now is the perfect time to get in on the action. This new bundle will begin appearing at participating retailers over the next few days for $399.99.”
This seems like a strange move given that Sony is already moving massive units each month on end and have gone on to establish more than 18 million units in the homes of gamers the world around. That's an impressive install base after just one year. It's not quite Wii numbers, but it's definitely better than the PS3. Two years into the PS3's lifespan, the console only had an install base of 3 million units in the U.S., as noted by Joystiq. That's an abysmal figure.
What's crazy is that the Wii, at the time, nearly sold in one month what the PS3's entire install base was in the U.S.
The tides have definitely turned this generation, with Sony taking the lead in most markets and Microsoft and Nintendo following behind at a sizable distance. Right now it's a battle between Microsoft and Nintendo for second place, with Microsoft instituting a number of of price-cuts and bundles to force during the holiday season. A lot of it was too good to pass up, even bundles that contained games that were glitchy and buggy as all get out. Still, two free games and an Xbox One console helped put Microsoft in a very good place during the holiday season.
Sony could be feeling the heat from the massive surge in sales of the Xbox One and are opting to respond by making the PS4 look slightly more appetizing to gamers who are torn between the two consoles.
If hardware specs don't sway you then you're obviously looking at the software and if the exclusives don't win you over then you're probably judging a purchase based on price. With the PS4 and Xbox One costing the same, and the $350 deal for the Xbox One now over, Sony is aiming to sweeten the deal by tossing in a free game with the package at no additional cost. Not only that, but they've added a game that was the winner of many awards when it originally released back in 2013.
I don't know if The Last of Us will sway casuals and families, but midcore and hardcore gamers sitting on the fence might see the deal and jump on it. The $399 PS4 with a free copy of The Last of Us Remastered is available right now at participating retailers.
