PlayStation Plus is still swinging for the fences in April, offering a lineup that includes six new games for the Instant Game Collection including a caped crusader, some battlefield royalty and a mischievous mouse who answers to M-I-C-K-E-Y.
For those who are somehow unfamiliar with how PlayStation Plus works, it’s basically Sony’s way of providing services and games for a subscription fee. Give them $50 a year and you’ll have access to online gaming on the PS4, cloud save storage, automatic updates and more. Also included in that fee is access to an ever-rotating crop of downloadable games that are yours to enjoy so long as you remain a subscriber. And, according to Sr. Community Specialist Kristine Steimer, April’s lineup of games is rather impressive.
In her recent post, Steimer outlines a crop of six new games for the Instant Game Collection spanning a wide variety of genres and available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
We’ll kick things off with the newest member of the Sony family, the PS4. This month’s IGC offering comes from the team behind the wonderful beat-em-up, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. It’s called Mercenary Kings, it’s an homage to old-school side-scrolling shooters, and it looks pretty dang rad, if I do say so myself.
“In this frantic 2D action game, you are part of the Mercenary Kings, the most skilled team of warriors-for-hire on Earth, but when your comrades have fallen and the fearsome forces of CLAW have seized an island-wide top secret Labortatory Bse, you must do what it takes to stop them,” reads the game’s description. Think Contra or Metal Slug and you’re halfway to understanding what Mercenary Kings is all about.
Onto the PlayStation 3 and we’re staring down the barrel of three (Count em! Three!) new games for the IGC. Batman: Arkham City should perk up more than a few bat-shaped ears as it leads the charge, alongside last summer’s big (yet smaller) hits, Stealth Inc. A Clone in the Dark and Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. In April, you’ll be able to beat the stuffing out of the scum of Gotham city, sneak through a highly deadly secret facility and revisit a platforming classic with a shiny new coat of paint.
Finally, we move onto the Vita, which has two new games being added to its IGC. Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD is the uuber version of one of PSN’s best tower defense games and Velocity Ultra is the updated version of one of the best vertically scrolling shooters to hit the gaming scene in quite some time. Both are great in bite-sized doses or for the long haul, so don’t forget to add them to your Vita library this April.
