Earlier this month, Nintendo revealed that Pokemon X and Y would feature a Pokemon with a striking resemblance to Mewtwo. A new video confirms that this Pokemon is an evolution of Mewtwo.

The video (via Gematsu) shows Mewtwo transforming in a flash of blue light. The clip is from animated film Pocket Monsters Best Wishes! The Movie: ExtremeSpeed Genesect: Mewtwo Awakens. The film will arrive in Japan this July, so presumably we'll learn more about this evolution then.

In his new form, Mewtwo's tail now extends from his head rather than his back. He's also got an unexplained loop of skin on the top of his head now. It kinda looks like a car spoiler.

This evolution is the first ever announced for Mewtwo. The trailer and screenshots suggest it possesses powerful psychic powers like Mewtwo, but that's all we know thus far. No word yet on his abilities or his name. Is he Mewthree, or is Nintendo going for a less obvious name?

Pokemon X and Y, like other entries in the series, has players journey to become the top Pokemon trainer. They'll gather monsters and use them in duels against other trainers. Other new Pokemon featured in X and Y include Sylveon, Xerneas and Yveltal.

The two games will hit the 3DS this fall.
