2K Games announced that XCOM will be released early next year. The sci-fi thriller is set to arrive on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on March 6th in North America. The international release will follow on the 9th.

XCOM is a "tactical action experience" set in the middle of the 20th century. A team of special government agents are tasked with rooting out an alien threat in Anytown, USA. The agents are armed with conventional weapons at first but eventually they'll capture these aliens' technology and try to use it against them.

"Every time I think of XCOM it gives me the chills, the kind that come from standing witness to the corruption and destruction of your world as you stand powerless to prevent it," said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. "I'm pleased to announce today that we will be bringing this experience to an even broader audience when XCOM comes to the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC in March 2012."

XCOM is in development at 2K Marin, a studio that worked on the first two BioShock games. The X-Com series predates them, though. The franchise was launched back in 1994 on the PC with X-COM: UFO Defense, developed by Mythos Games and MicroProse Software.
