Sega's Sonic Boom: Fire And Ice was announced a while back... in fact it was announced during the week of E3 in June of 2015. The game was originally supposed to release for the Nintendo 3DS during the holiday season of 2015, but now it's arriving in the fall of 2016.
Game Informer is reporting that Sega announced during a panel at this year's SXSW in Austin, Texas, that Sonic Boom: Fire And Ice would be released on the Nintendo 3DS later this year on September 27.
The game has been delayed literally by an entire year. It's pretty crazy when you think about it. Well, technically it's not crazy that the game has been delayed by an entire year, it's the fact that it was delayed by an entire year and Sega didn't say anything about it beforehand. They had practically no real promotional campaigns leading up to the game's original release, and if it wasn't for the SXSW panel there weren't any real announcements making their way around to let people know that Sonic Boom: Fire And Ice was even still on the way.
Part of it probably has to do with the fact that Sonic Boom was not very well received when it launched on the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS way back in 2014. It was supposed to be a rebranding of Sonic and his friends for a new generation, accompanied by an animated TV series. Essentially Sega wanted to reignite the flames that made gamers fall in love with Sonic in the first place. However, that did not happen at all when Sonic Boom released on the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS back in 2014.
What ended up happening was that both games released to very little fanfare and extremely poor reviews from mainstream media outlets. What was the actual problem, though? Well, there were a string of problems, mostly with the Wii U release of Sonic Boom, which featured a number of glitches and game-breaking bugs where players would get stuck, fall through the floor or have to deal with mechanics that didn't operate the way that they were supposed to. It's hard to garner any sort of enjoyment out of the experience when it's riddled with bugs and glitches... or worse yet, a barely-enjoyable story.
There's been a hit and miss cycle with Sonic games lately, with some of them turning out okay (like Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors) and others being abysmal (Like Sonic Boom or Sonic And The Black Knight). There were rumors that Sega was pulling out of the console software business after the sales failure of Sonic Boom but they denied those rumors. They haven't really focused very heavily on console gaming but they still seem to want to pump out portable games quite readily.
Game Informer believes that Sonic Boom: Fire And Ice could turn out okay if they just make sure the bugs are squashed and the gameplay is solid. We'll find out how well Sega can accomplish this feat when the game launches this upcoming September.
