Randy Pitchford, Gearbox's president, took to Twitter to address the wildfire that spread from Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Burch, who was recently asked in an interview about Borderlands 3 and whether Gearbox was already planning things for the sequel. Burch acknowledged there were ideas he would love to implement for the third game. According to Pitchford, work on Borderlands 3 has not officially started.

Igo Gaming picked up the tweets from Pitchford, who kept it simple on Twitter, saying...
Chill out internet. No one has started working on a sequel to Borderlands 2. It's fun to talk and think, but actual effort is focused on Borderlands 2 DLC, Aliens, etc.

Clean and Simple truth: The only Borderlands related game development work going on right now is for Borderlands 2. I expect that to change at some point, but that is the state of the box at this moment in time...

Anthony was speaking to his thoughts. We're all thinking about it and it's exciting to think. But there's no project - no actual effort.

Well that's a bit of a...uh...I'm not sure. Borderlands 2 just came out and I imagine the team will be patching and working on DLC for the next few months. Additional DLC is already in the pipeline but so far Gearbox has been silent-Sam on what the actual content will entail.

There's already speculation that additional DLC for Borderlands 2 could contain new characters, and given the new design hooks, Gearbox has stated that it'll be easier to design bigger and more complex DLC for the sequel this time around. The Mechromancer is the main focus point at this time and we'll keep you tuned in regarding additional news for DLC as it becomes available.

If you're still on the fence about buying Borderlands 2, be sure to check out Gaming Blend's review before taking the plunge.
