Everybody loves free stuff, right? The folks at Gearbox Software understand that fact, which is why they’ll be dishing out a handful of free characters for their popular cooperative shooter, Battleborn. The first freebie will be Alani, and we now have details on her play style, release date and more.
Announced earlier today on the Battleborn blog, Alani will arrive as a free downloadable character starting May 24. That’s when the “Early Access” crowd will be able to get their hands on her, anyway, with the wide release not hitting until May 31. The time for both of those release dates is 9 a.m. PDT.
As a reminder, Alani is only the first of five free characters that will be coming to Battleborn. She’s a warrior-monk healer and, if you want to add her to your roster, you’re going to have to put in a bit of leg work. She’s still 100 percent free, but you’ll need to spend 47,500 in-game credits to snag her. So, yeah, you might want to start saving up for that launch window next week.
If, however, you would rather get her sooner, then there are a couple of ways to do exactly that. For starters, folks who purchased the Digital Deluxe edition of Battleborn or picked up the Season Pass, you’ll instantly unlock Alani using a Hero Key on May 24. Finally, there’s the PlayStation 4 crowd that took part in the game’s open beta. If you fall into that group, no matter what version of Battleborn you own, you can expect to receive a free Hero Key just in time to unlock Alani during that early window. Otherwise, you’ve got to wait an extra week in order to cash in some Battleborn currency.
According to the update, Alani is a member of the Eldrid faction. She was raised as a healer but forced to be a warrior, which makes her basically the best type of white mage you could hope to have on your team. Being from a planet with plentiful oceans, Alani’s abilities are water-based. In other words, she can use H2O to hurt her foes or heal her teammates, so you can expect all Avatar fans to immediately nickname this waterbender Korra.
But what does she look like in action, you may be asking. Well, you’re going to have to wait a bit longer to find out. It looks like the Gearbox squad plans on doing a full reveal on May 24, so expect a trailer, additional details, etc. to drop on the same day she becomes available for the Early Access crowd.
Need even more reasons to dive into Battleborn? Well, there’s also a Double XP event planned and, wouldn’t you know it, it partially coincides with Alani’s launch. The event runs on all platforms from this Friday, May 20, at 8 a.m. PDT through next Wednesday, May 25, at the same time. Get in, beef up your characters and have some fun.
