The rebooted RoboCop may have found his love interest. Deadline reports that Abbie Cornish is in talks to join RoboCop as the female lead. She would join The Killing star Joel Kinnaman, who has been cast as the cyborg police officer. Jose Padilha is on board to direct.

Cornish is an odd choice, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. She just doesn’t have anything on her resume that suggests an interest in larger-budget, action-and-effects heavy work. Most recently, she took over the modern angle of a period love story in Madonna’s directorial effort W.E. Prior to that, the beautiful Cornish carried additionally graceful period movies like Bright Star and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, though she did have a role in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, and that was nothing but effects.

This news indicates that Padilha’s remake of the Paul Verhoeven-directed original is in full swing, as it comes shortly after the announcement that Samuel L. Jackson is in talks as well (Gary Oldman was also recently cast in the film). Padilha obviously turned a lot of heads with his previous action efforts Elite Squad and its sequel, The Enemy Within. Tackling a beloved film like RoboCop is a dicey proposition, but hiring talented actors to fill key roles only helps, and Cornish, like mentioned, is a good (yet unconventional) choice.

RoboCop will begin filing shortly, aiming for an August 9, 2013 release date. What do you think of the casting choices so far?
