Del Toro Eyes Dr. Strange Movie

It’s got to be one of two things: either Guillermo del Toro never sleeps, or he loves the rumor mill so much that he hints at new projects weekly just for the hell of it. He’s apparently hard at work on The Hobbit, Frankenstein, Hellboy III, At The Mountains of Madness and as many Harry Potter movies as they’ll let him be in charge of. But now he’s off teasing us again, saying he and Neil Gaiman have chatted about making a Dr. Strange movie.

Dr. Strange is a lesser-known member of the Marvel universe, a guy who’s a legitimate sorcerer and is all kinds of in touch with the supernatural. He told Empire Online “That’s an interesting character because you can definitely make him more in the pulpy occult detective/magician mould and formula than was done in the Weird Tales, for example...the idea of a character that really dabbles in the occult in a way that’s not X-Filey, where the supernatural is taken for granted.”

Having never read anything about Dr. Strange or watched The X-Files, I have no idea what the above sentence means. But hey, sounds exciting, right? At this point I’m just tired of getting excited about potential del Toro projects and ready to see the jolly Mexican actually make a damn movie. The Hobbit will likely be getting off the ground shortly now that the strike is over, which will probably keep him busy enough that he’ll only announce one or two new projects in the next few months. With everything on his plate, though, del Toro will basically own fantasy filmmaking for the next ten years. So brace yourselves for lots of fantastical creatures, dark humor and… oh, who am I kidding? I’m as pumped as ever. Bring on the Reign of del Toro!
