Aquaman’s presence in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice still hasn’t been confirmed by either Warner Bros. or director, Zack Snyder, even though most film sites are 99.9% convinced that Jason Momoa will be playing the nautical superhero in the blockbuster.
Despite this silence we’ve now got our first description of the character’s look in the film courtesy of Schmoes Know. They’ve reported that Momoa’s incarnation of Aquaman will look like a surfer, and he will even possess "tribal tattoos and all that jazz." That isn’t too much of a surprise, as this would fit in with the Game Of Thrones actor’s physique and appearance, plus it would also ease in viewers who don’t know too much about the character’s history as they slowly get to grips with the king of Atlantis on his cinematic debut.
But did Aquaman already make his on-screen debut in Man Of Steel? According to Schmoes Know … kind of. In the early stages of Warner Bros’ 2013 action extravaganza we see Clark Kent save the lives of countless people stuck on a burning oilrig that then collapses into the sea. Just after this tremendous act of bravery Supes wakes-up in the water with whales above him. Don’t remember? Don’t worry. Here’s a clip to refresh your memory:
According to the aforementioned publication, Aquaman sent those whales over to check if Superman was OK, while it’s even been suggested that the huge mammals actually helped Krypton’s most famous son back to land too. An either more outlandish claim is that they might even show the journey at some point in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice! Now I’m not a Zack Snyder naysayer, in fact I actually quite enjoy his highly stylised but vacant approach to blockbuster cinema, but a part of me would be very surprised if the 300 filmmaker, alongside writer David Goyer, had planned out Aquaman’s introduction in this fashion. However the other, less-cynical side of me is a tad more convinced that they did put the whale scene in there for that exact purpose. I mean it’s pretty superfluous otherwise.
If the latter proves to be true, then my faith in the franchise will have been somewhat restored as it proves that there has actually been some forward planning to DC’s burgeoning universe and that the studio isn’t just making it up as they go along. On the other-hand they could have just realised how redundant the above scene was and then written a plot involving Aquaman around it. Either way I’ll be happy.
Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice will be released on March 25, 2016, and it will see Henry Cavil, Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburn and Diane Lane reprise their Man Of Steel roles as Clark Kent/Superman, Lois Lane, Perry White and Martha Kent, while they’ll also be joined by Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor and Alfred Pennyworth. It’s going to be kind of a big deal.
