While the new Star Wars film is going to reunite fans of the original trilogy with many of our old friends, it will also introduce us to some new ones. So how does the old cast feel about these new kids getting involved in their movies? Well Chewbacca for one thinks they’re pretty great.
Peter Mayhew has played Chewbacca since the beginning. In an interview with Australia’s Bmag, he spoke about working with some of the newest parts of the Star Wars saga, actors John Boyega and Daisy Ridley. He and John Boyega apparently got on famously. Mayhew says Boyega has a comic’s sense of timing, which gives him a significant advantage in his acting.
On the other hand, Mayhew said getting on with Daisy Ridley was a little bit tougher. While he has nothing but wonderful things to say about her as an actress, it sounds like she was a little tougher to get to open up personally while on set. When they attended Star Wars Celebration earlier this year, however, she had warmed up significantly. The actor explains:
Daisy… was a little bit solid. More like Natalie [Portman] on the other movies [the prequels]. But I think, once she gets to see everything going on, she’s going to enjoy it, because it’s going to relax her. … I think she got taken aside by her agent and told not to be too stiff. So we watched her blossom, from a quiet young lady, into the girl who was there at Star Wars Celebration.
It sounds like Ridley may have been a bit overwhelmed by the entire Star Wars experience. It’s not difficult to imagine, a young woman being thrust into one of the largest franchises in the history of entertainment. It wouldn’t be the first time that somebody didn’t react well to the situation. While it’s difficult to say how relaxed she now is, she certainly doesn’t come across as stiff anymore. Her absolutely beautiful freak out over the newest trailer certainly doesn’t show somebody who is holding back. Likewise, Ridley’s recent interview with Carrie Fisher shows a woman whose energy and excitement is absolutely palpable.
Mayhew’s comments echo those of Harrison Ford who recently sang the praises of all the new cast members, calling them, including Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver, "phenomenal." It looks like all the new guys have received the official seal of approval from the old guard. Are you more excited to see all the classic characters again, or to see where the new actors are going to take the franchise from here?
