Indie Hits The East And Spring Breakers Get New Release Dates

It’s an unfortunate fact, but many indie movies are fairly difficult to track down. They’ll get positive reviews out of major film festivals, but never get a wide release and typically only play in the smallest markets, the smallest theaters or both. But now we have release date news for two of the biggest titles to come out of the indie scene in the last year.

First up comes Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling’s The East. The film received an overwhelmingly positive reception when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, and that success turned into a distribution deal with Fox Searchlight, which has in turn led to an official release date. The studio has announced that the eco-terrorist thriller is now scheduled to hit theaters on May 31st, where it's only competition as of now is the Ethan Hawke-led thriller The Purge.

Next up we have the hotly anticipated Harmony Korine movie Spring Breakers, the film that notably features James Franco as a corn-rowed crime lord and Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens as bikini-clad crooks. You may remember that a couple of weeks ago it was announced that the title would be playing in New York and Los Angeles on March 22nd and everywhere else on March 29th, but now the situation has changed. Both dates for the crime-thriller have been bumped up by a week, the respective release dates moving to March 15th and March 22nd.

Here’s hoping that they both find a way to a theater near you!
