Suicide Squad may have found its Deadshot in Jai Courtney. The Terminator: Genisys star is now reportedly in talks to play the eagle-eyed assassin in David Ayer's planned super-villain movie.
If Variety's intel proves accurate, Jai Courtney may be joining Tom Hardy, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto in Suicide Squad, as all of the actors are reportedly in negotiations to join Warner Bros. anticipated DC project As of yet, Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed any casting, and it's still not 100% who all of the actors may be playing. The new trade report suggests that Tom Hardy may be playing team founder Rick Flag, and that Will Smith may be WB's choice to play Captain Boomerang (it's been previously said that Jared Leto is in talks to play The Joker, while Margot Robbie has been heavily rumored for the part of Harley Quinn, The Joker's equally psychotic significant other). Also said to be in the film is Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor - the new version of the character set to debut in Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Australian actor Jai Courtney's building quite a list of credits for himself. Following his run as Varro on Spartacus: Blood and Sand, he moved over features with roles in A Good Day To Die Hard, Jack Reacher, I, Frankenstein and Divergent. He's set to reprise his role as Eric in the Divergent sequel, Insurgent, and we'll see him playing Kyle Reese in Terminator: Genisys. Those familiar with these titles in his filmography know that he has had the chance to play both heroes and villains over the course of his career, and interestingly Deadshot a.k.a. Floyd Lawton should provide him an opportunity to do both at the same time. While the character is indeed a merciless assassin who kills for money (and is extremely good at it), he also has a daughter whom he cares for deeply - which should provide a softer side to the villain.
In Suicide Squad comics, groups of supervillains are brought together and offered the chance to reduce their respective sentences by taking part in extremely dangerous black ops missions. In order to make sure the criminals don't misbehave, they are outfitted with GPS transmitters as well as explosives that will detonate if they step out of line. Deadshot has been a member of the group going back to the reinvention of the team in 1987 and over the years has worked with many different teammates - which doesn't exactly help us narrow down who the other actors in negotiations may be playing.
Suicide Squad, which is currently in the process of getting a rewrite from director David Ayer, is looking at starting production next year, with a release date set for summer 2016.
