Whoever lands the role of Roland Deschain in Ron Howard's adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower is going to have an incredibly busy decade. Set to have three movies and two seasons of a television show, the actor isn't likely to be available for any other work while the project is on-going. For some, this will be seen as a hindrance to their creativity, while others view it as an amazing opportunity. It may be a while before we see any definitive casting, but if sources are to believed, there are two front runners.

The New York Post is reporting from anonymous tipsters that Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen, in that order, top the studio's wish list for the project. The news is somewhat consistent with a story from a couple weeks ago, in which Howard acknowledged fan demand to see Mortensen in the lead role. Akiva Goldsman (The DaVinci Code, I Am Legend) is currently working on the script and the plan remains to have the same cast for all three films and both seasons of the television series.

The scope of this project is so massive that I'm still hesitant to believe that it will actually ever happen. There are simply so many moving parts that I find it hard to believe that they will be able to keep it all together for such a long stretch. Anyone that becomes involved with The Dark Tower is going to be signing away a huge chunk of their life and there's always the risk that it could be a miserable failure. At the same time, I'm always a fan of epic efforts - here's hoping it manages to succeed.
