Oprah Winfrey Might Join Suicide Squad To Play This Comic Book Character

David Ayer's Suicide Squad already has an absolutely stacked cast. As was announced earlier this week, Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne are all on-board to star in the DC Comics film... but the movie isn't ready to stop adding big names just yet. It turns out that the production is now looking for an actress to play Amanda Waller - the character who directs the team - and right now Oprah Winfrey, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer are the top candidates for the part.

As described by Variety, Amanda Waller can perhaps best be described as having a Nick Fury-esque role in the proceedings, as it is she who is in charge of selecting the individuals who will risk their lives as Suicide Squad members. This would obviously provide her with plenty to do in the movie, which would go far in explaining why Warner Bros. and DC Comics are targeting such top tier talent. At this point it's unclear exactly how far the production is into the casting process for the character, but word is that Oprah Winfrey is currently considered the frontrunner.

When Amanda Waller appears on screen in 2016's Suicide Squad, it actually won't be the first time that we've seen her in live action. This first happened in 2010 when she was played by Pam Grier on Smallville:

Then, some will remember that Angela Bassett played the influential character in Martin Campbell's 2011 Green Lantern film:

And more recently Cynthia Addai-Robinson has been bringing her to life on the television series Arrow (it should also be noted that there is an episode from Season 2 that features this incarnation of Waller putting together a version of the Suicide Squad):

For those unfamiliar with the comics, Suicide Squad follows a group of incarcerated criminals who are given an opportunity to reduce their individual sentences by performing incredibly dangerous Black Ops missions for the government. While plot details remain unavailable, it's been confirmed that Jared Leto will play The Joker, Will Smith will play Deadshot, Tom Hardy will play Rick Flag, Margot Robbie will play Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney will play Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne will play Enchantress. It's also been said that Jesse Eisenberg's version of Lex Luthor from Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is expected to be part of the cast, but that information has not yet been officially confirmed.

Suicide Squad is currently in pre-production, but filming is scheduled to start next year and Warner Bros. will have the movie in theaters on August 5, 2016.
