Stan Lee's Bollywood Superhero Movie Just Took A Huge Step Forward

While Stan Lee is no longer involved in the day to day activities of Marvel, beyond his extensive list of cameo movie roles, he’s continued to work on new and inventive comic characters. One of his most recent was 2011’s Chakra the Invincible, his first Indian superhero character. A couple years ago it was reported that there was a plan to bring Chakra to life on the big screen. While we haven’t heard anything about the Chakra movie since then, the movie just jumped back to life as it has now signed a director and has been officially greenlit for a full Bollywood production.

Stan Lee’s POW Entertainment has been working with Graphic India since 2013 to bring Chakra the Invincible to the screen but now they have partnered with India’s Phantom Films to help them distribute the project. In addition, The Hollywood Reporter says that Vikramaditya Motwane, one of Phantom’s co-founders, has signed on to direct the picture. Motwane will also be working on the script for the film along with Lee and Sharad Devarajan, CEO of Graphic India. The director is described as being a passionate comic book fan, so he’s likely a good candidate for the first major Indian superhero film.

Chakra the Invincible tells the story of Raju Ra, a young boy living in India whose mentor develops a suit which is capable of weaponizing the body’s chakras. In Indian spiritual thought, there are believed to be seven points of energy which the body is capable of drawing upon. Raju uses these as weapons to fight super villains and protect India. This new live-action version of the character is reportedly planned to be a young man, rather than a boy. Chakra has previously been the subject of an animated version on Cartoon Network India.

While not having the box office strength of China or having the production capacity of Hollywood, India has nonetheless become a global player in movie making due to their unique take on the art form. Musical numbers are a large part of most Indian productions, regardless of the film’s subject matter and the Chakra the Invincible movie is likely to be no different. No word on whether Stan Lee will be making his standard cameo here. We can only hope it will be part of a musical number.

Are you ready for the first musical superhero movie? We’re certainly hoping Chakra the Invincible gets some American distribution. This is something we just need to see.
