Just in case you didn’t know, 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek’s television premiere. As you could probably have guessed, millions of Trekkies across the globe are planning on celebrating this occasion rather enthusiastically. And to help their cause, the United States Postal Service has released a set of exclusive stamps that are inspired by the series. And they’re all rather superb.
These rather fantastic stamps were designed by the Heads Of State, who worked in conjunction with esteemed artist Antonio Alcala to create them. USPS confirmed that the Star Trek homage would be part of their 2016 catalogue in a press release towards the end of last year. But what do the images actually depict?

The top left one is of the Starship Enterprise, which is flying inside the outline of the Starfleet insignia. To give it a nice touch of class it is set against a gold background. The next is simply a silhouette of a crewman from the Starship Enterprise inside a transporter, which is then accompanied by a red background. This is then followed up with a silhouette of the Enterprise itself against a green backing. And last, but obviously far from least, is a stamp that depicts the outline of the Vulcan salute, which is the gesture that Leonard Nimoy made iconic as Spock. And because I know you are dying to know, this is accompanied by a blue background.

Not content with creating these fantastic nods to Gene Roddenberry’s sensational franchise, USPS have also added the words, "Space … the final frontier," beneath each of the stamps. This was the phrase that William Shatner’s Captain Kirk would use at the start of every Star Trek episode.

All in all, they’re a rather spiffing collection of stamps, which would instantly make any letter that you send infinitely better. It’s also the latest in a long line of celebrations that are planned to commemorate Star Trek’s 50th birthday. The biggest of which is Star Trek Beyond, the third instalment to the rebooted franchise that stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock, respectively.

Star Trek Beyond is due out on July 22, 2016, and you can start making your letters and parcel extra special thanks to the Star Trek paraphernalia right now.
