New In Town Has A Friendlier Rating

We’re just a few weeks from Renee Zellweger’s new romantic comedy, New in Town, but is the movie ready for release? Apparently the picture is still getting some tweaks, enough so that the rating of the film has changed, according to Variety.

Originally a PG-13 rated picture, the movie has been cut down to a more family friendly PG rating. Reportedly, the cut material was related to language, not content, so it’s not exactly like this was a bawdy comedy to begin with (somehow I don’t see Zellweger starring in a Zack and Miri like comedy). Speculation for the change is that the record for PG films at the box office has been strong lately, so Lionsgate may be out to capitalize on that.

Of course, if Lionsgate and Gold Circle Films are smart, they’ll turn this into another plus with an “unrated” or “uncut” edition of the movie on DVD. Then again, with Zellweger’s name attached, would anyone expect an “unrated” edition of the film to be risqué enough that it would actually benefit DVD sales?
