Desolation of Smaug Box
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Blu-ray
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is the second of a planned trilogy of movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit. Despite the fact it only covers a few chapters from the famous novel, the movie offers plenty of action and a striking ending that makes it a vast improvement over the first segment.

After a quick expository scene set in The Prancing Pony (a popular inn in the LOTR series, as well), Desolation of Smaug picks up where The Unexpected Journey leaves off, with Gandolf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), the handsome dwarf Kili (Aiden Turner) and the other members of the 12 companions on their quest to retrieve the Arkenstone. Along the way, the crew must run from and defend themselves against orcs, giant spiders and the titular villain, the feared dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

The action is go-go-go throughout the second movie in the trilogy, but despite this, director Jackson still manages to focus on the details, using the exquisite New Zealand scenery to bring his fantasy world to life. Jackson’s been doing Tolkien for quite some time, but viewers should still marvel at the look of Rivendell and the screen tricks that turn many of the leads into smaller versions of themselves. We’ve seen a lot of this stuff before, but the narrative’s engaging story arc makes everything seem fresh and familiar at the same time.

Best Special Feature:
The Peter Jackson-directed films based off the JRR Tolkien works have always done a wonderful job of depicting what it feels like to be on a film set. Desolation of Smaug really continues that legacy. "In The Company Of The Hobbit" takes it time to give everyone on set the credit they deserve. From the chefs to the crew members to the set designers, they all get some time and with continual time updates, it’s surprisingly easy to track. It'll also give viewers a new respect for Jackson who has to be rushed around all day to approve the finished products from all the different departments working under him.
