Wet Hot American Summer May Get A Prequel, But No 10th Anniversary DVD

Wet Hot American Summer is one of those films that magically has an all-star cast 10 years after the movie was released. Though nobody knew who they were back in 2001, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Amy Poehler and Bradley Cooper have all become incredibly successful, while the rest of the class, including Janeane Garofalo, Christopher Meloni, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, David Hyde Pierce, Judah Friedlander, Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, have done quite well for themselves also. Still, director David Wain is hoping that he can bring them all back together again.

Speaking on the Q&A Podcast (via The Playlist), Wain revealed that there has been talk of either a sequel or a prequel to Wet Hot American Summer. Said Wain, the plan would be to have the actors, who are all in their 30s or 40s, play their 16 year old counterparts. But while that sounds great, the director also came with bad news. Apparently he has approached Universal about the possibility of 10 Year Anniversary Edition DVD/Blu-ray, but the studio isn't interested. Said Wain, "I told them we would be willing to do a new prequel teaser short for it and new interviews and new material but they were like, 'No, nobody buys it. Nobody cares.'"

Well, that's a real mixed bag. I really love the idea of a prequel and getting that incredible cast back together, but I also must question a) if enough of the cast will be available (they might all still be friends but that doesn't mean they're not busy) and b) if any studio will be willing to put up the money. As for the 10th anniversary release, it's kind of hard to actually get anything done about it. I could proclaim that everyone should go out and buy a copy of the movie, but then you'll just have to sell it when the new version comes out. It's really a lose-lose situation.
