Finding Dory has just kept swimming to the top of the box office for the last three weeks, but it looks like another animated feature may be poised to take that crown. The Secret Life of Pets is tracking toward a massive take. Based on projections, it looks like the story about what house pets do when we're not around could rack up as much as $70 million this weekend, which should be more than enough to take the title.
While $70 million is just about half of what Finding Dory did in its opening weekend, since the latest Pixar film opened, nothing has been able to keep it from winning the box office. Even the July Fourth weekend, traditionally a major release window, was not able to serve up anything to take it down. While The Legend of Tarzan performed better than expected, it was only good enough for second place. However, since Dory put up just over $50 million last weekend, that means that even if The Secret Life of Pets fails to hit the expected number, it's still likely to take the weekend. If anything, this year we've seen most movies exceed the numbers predicted by The Hollywood Reporter, so the more likely scenario is that Pets will do even better. The only other major release on Friday is the R-rated comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates which is tracking low, only expecting to take in about $12 million.
The $70 million expectation is great news for Illumination Entertainment, The Secret Life of Pets only cost a reported $75 million to produce, which is on the low side for an animated feature. With the over $30 million that the film has already raked in from several countries where the film has already released, Pets is looking to be a financial success almost as soon as the doors open here.
So while a new movie looks ready to be the biggest movie in America, it means we will still be on a streak of four weeks in a row where an animated feature rules all. It will be interesting to see where things go from there. We have another entry in the Ice Age franchise gearing up for release in a couple of weeks, however for the animation streak to continue they will have to overcome major franchises like Star Trek and a film with a lot of buzz (positive and negative) surrounding it, the reboot of Ghostbusters.
