Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim was simultaneously a throwback and ahead of its time when it hit theaters in 2013. The special effects extravaganza harkened back to a bygone era of awesome monster movies, and delivered some serious thrills with its endlessly enjoyable Kaiju vs. Jaeger battles. After a long and arduous fight through development hell, Pacific Rim 2 has finally entered production. To commemorate that occasion, star John Boyega shared a quick behind the scenes photo, confirming the title in the process. Check it out below to see for yourself.
John Boyega has just taken to Instagram to share an image from the first day of shooting on the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel. The above photo is an image of the script cover for Pacific Rim 2, and it confirms that the film will indeed be called: Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. The use of the term "Maelstrom" seems incredibly telling, as a maelstrom is a whirlpool-esque storm that swirls in the middle of the ocean. We still don't know that's going to happen during the events of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, but it's clear that the Kaiju threat from the sea has not been completely vanquished.
If you consider yourself one of the many individuals who are currently ecstatic about the prospect of a new Pacific Rim film, then you may want to keep an eye on John Boyega's social media profiles over the course of the next few months. As of now it's looking more and more likely that he will consistently share behind the scenes information and plot details as time wears on. We seriously cannot wait to see what he shares next.
Of course, it's also worth noting that the connection of John Boyega's character to the events of the original Pacific Rim makes the sequel so much more compelling. For those of you who have not heard, Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost (played by Idris Elba in the original film) and he will likely follow in his father's footsteps as he joins the Jaeger program to help fight off the threat posed by the dreaded Kaiju monsters. If nothing else, this guarantees that Pacific Rim: Maelstrom will maintain a strong emotional connection to the events of the film that preceded it.
CinemaBlend will bring you any and all relevant information related to the upcoming release of Pacific Rim: Maelstrom as more details become available to us. The highly anticipated sequel will blast its way into theaters on February 23, 2018.
