One Star Wars Movie Rian Johnson Is Definitely Not Working On

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Rian Johnson is taking on a major role within the Star Wars universe with his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi leading to him spearheading an entirely new trilogy. However, there's at least one Star Wars movie the director isn't interested in directing. A standalone film focusing on Obi-Wan Kenobi has long been a rumored project at Lucasfilm, and while Johnson says he'd love to see that movie, he won't be the one bringing it to us. During a recent Q&A Johnson was asked if he'd be interested in the project, but he admitted that right now his schedule is a bit full. According to Johnson...

In seeing it? Sure, I'll watch that movie in a heartbeat. No. Right now, I'm just focused on the new trilogy. Isn't that enough? God, man, I'd love to see that movie.

The idea of doing an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, or possibly a few of them, has been an ongoing rumor almost as long as Disney has been planning Star Wars movies, but nothing has ever been confirmed. The most recent rumors have indicated that it could even be the first movie we see after the current trilogy concludes in 2019. However, while that might be the case, Lucasfilm will need to find somebody else to write and/or direct the movie.

That's probably for the best, as Rian Johnson told Collider during the same Q&A that he's in the very earliest stages of working on his own new film trilogy, so he's got a lot of work to do on it, and anything else that came along would only delay these new films. Johnson has said that he sold Lucasfilm only on the idea of doing a new trilogy in some new, unrelated corner of the universe, not on any specific idea or plot, so Johnson has a lot to do before even beginning to actually write a script.

Between Rian Johnson's new trilogy and a recent announcement that the Game of Thrones creators will also be working on Star Wars movies, we know that several films are in some stage of development, and we know that Disney has plans to release at least one Star Wars movie a year from now until the heat death of the universe, however, we don't have so much as a release date being held for an Untitled Star Wars Movie in 2020.

With Rian Johnson's trilogy, being in the earliest stages, it seems likely that a standalone Star Wars Story is likely to appear in 2020, although, with that now less than two years away, somebody is going to need to get moving on it, be it an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie or something else, in order to have a finished product in time for either the summer or holiday season. Maybe the movie, whatever it is, already has a writer or director working on preproduction as we speak. All we know for sure is one guy who is not doing any of that.
