Nothing helps get people into the holiday spirit like a movie about the end of the earth. Americans welcomed the chance to watch a CGI world crash and burn before their Thanksgiving dinners do the same, handing over a hefty $65 million to 2012, Roland Emmerich's latest global apocolypse flick.

The movie also announces the end of the fall doldrums and the arrival of the Hollywood holiday season. 2012's debut is the highest since Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince in mid-July and the first movie to break the $50 million mark since G.I. Joe in August. It's also the second highest opening for any of Emmerich's movies, losing out only to The Day After Tomorrow which only destroyed the northern hemisphere but banked $68 million back in 2004.

Disney's A Christmas Carol held on strong, only dropping 25% from last weekend. In second place with $22 million it's still a long ways from recovering its screaming high $200 million budget. With less than $20 million in international sales reported so far, the grand total gross for the movie ranks at just over $80 million.

Precious, or for those who prefer the only slightly ostentatious but apparently preferred full title Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire, expanded to a meager 174 screens but that was more than enough for Oprah's favorite new movie to break into the top ten. At fourth place the movie took in $6 million this weekend, an impressive feat for a movie in such small release.

By comparison, Pirate Radio opened in 880 theaters to the tune of only $2.8 million, just good enough for eleventh place. That's extremely bad news for a movie with $50 million to re-coop.
